The Foundation for End-of-Life Care
Providing Resources to Advance the Quality of Care
for Terminally Ill Patients and Their Loved Ones

Mission

The Foundation serves as a sustaining source of financial support to nurture fundamental change in the way death, dying and bereavement issues are addressed in our society. This revolution in the way death is perceived and experienced is encouraged through the funding of an array of initiatives-academic and clinical, philosophical and practical, large and small.

The specific mission of the Foundation is to provide resources to advance the quality of care for terminally ill patients and their loved ones. A not-for-profit public charity, the Foundation was established by VITAS Healthcare Corporation, the nation's largest hospice provider.

The Foundation, both in its role as a founding sponsor of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life and through a host of other grant-making initiatives:

  • Supports improvements in medical education;
  • Funds promising clinical research;
  • Stimulates public policy discussion; and,
  • Underwrites measures to advance the state of hospice care in America.

Significantly, the Foundation reaches beyond academia to the bedside, providing funding to meet the special needs of individual dying patients and their families.

Further, the Foundation provides a meaningful way for patients' families, friends and other supporters of the hospice philosophy to honor their loved ones by contributing to the advancement of quality end-of-life care.
